Producer, Director, Choreographer, Instructor, & Dancer
Joel Suarez produces and directs dance choreography, gives dance instruction, and dances himself having been performing since the age of five. He produced his first show in Maui, Hawaii in 1997 at Casanova Restaurant in Makawao. Joel, along with some friends, created an artistic dance review called "Heatwave" to raise money for his other productions and benefit work in the community. In 1998 Joel produced a benefit called "Funktion Birthday" which included a lingerie fashion show. In 1999 he produced "Funktion Dance Review" at Iao Theater and "It's All About Me" in 2000. In 2001, Joel produced "The Mask" lingerie fashion show and "Mother's Day Show" at Baldwin High School in 2002. He is now teaching at the Maui Charter School every Monday at 7:PM. So You Think You Can Dance
Joel was recently a contestant on the ABC show, "So You Think You Can Dance" (season #3). "American Idol" finalist Camille Velasco was one of Joel's students for performance dancing. He is currently dancing for "Manutea Halau" (Mapuana Samonte) and "Maui Song and Dance Company" (Kimberly Day). He has won numerous dance competitions here in Maui and Oahu being a "Shower of Stars Champion" in 2002 and "Dance Master Competition Winner" and "Hip Hop Dance Master Champion" in 1995 at the Wave Waikiki.
Joel Suarez is a self-trained dancer who enjoys watching all of the various styles of dance and dance moves and then he creates his own unique choreography. Joel has been featured on television commercials and television shows. His dancing technique enhances and focuses his philosophy of dance where his spirituality meets space and movement. Joel loves to practice his dance at the beach and uses dancing as a way to heal the spirit of himself, his clients, and his students. He has done numerous fundraising events for the American Cancer Society, Maui AIDS Foundation, and Women Helping Women where he gathered his talented friends to assist him in raising the money.
Some of the dancers and dance companies featured are: Belly Roll Dance Company, Black Sheep Belly Dance, Tristen Noel of Velvet Peacock Designs, Gypsi's, Djembe's & Fire, Bamboo Forest, Funktion Dancers, Larissa Gorospe, Kristina Krejer, VJ Hai-dai, and DJ Michael Fong.
